Onyx
Translucent Iranian onyx in green, honey and orange, supplied as blocks and slabs for backlit and decorative work.
Onyx is a banded, translucent variety of calcite. It is the one stone in our range specified as much for how light passes through it as for how it looks in reflected light, which is why it is used for backlit panels, bar fronts, reception desks and decorative objects rather than for floors.
Iran is one of the principal sources of commercial onyx, and we supply green, honey/yellow and orange material as raw blocks and slabs. Because translucency and banding vary considerably between blocks, onyx is a stone that should be selected from photographs of the actual piece rather than from a sample of the type.
Onyx is softer and more brittle than marble and needs care in handling, fixing and cleaning. It is not a general-purpose flooring stone. Tell us the panel size and whether it will be backlit, and we will document the specific block before it ships.
